Medical Revalidation – Systems Challenge

Medical Revalidation is the system for regularly checking and assuring patients and colleagues that every UK doctor is up to date and fit to practice. The Department of Health set out its intention in the publication Medical Revalidation – Principles and Next Steps: the Report of the Cheif Medical Officer for England’s Working Group, to introduce a process for medical revalidation as a drive to produce better, safer UK doctors. It was based on wide-ranging discussions of the proposals set out in the Government white paper ‘Trust, Assurance and Safety – The regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century’ (February 2007). The General Medical Council (GMC) and all four health departments of the UK are committed to introducing revalidation in late 2012. Revalidation isa bout organisational excellence and quality, providing the best possible care for patients by focusing on the professional development of medical staff.

Revalidation is likely to be extended to all healthcare workers in the future. What is your organisation doing about a single, flexible system of recording evidence and tracking competence, which can apply to all staff groups?
