Totara is a custom distribution of the highly successful Moodle platform, which we find to be a great match for our clients looking for a flexible and cost-effective learning management system. Totara adds “corporate” functionality to Moodle, including department structures, positions/work structures, competency management, powerful reporting, and enhanced real-world training booking.
The top 4 reasons we like Totara:
- It is highly customisable, so can be designed to reflect your organisation’s employer brand, language and local processes.
- It offers a great deal of flexibility in implementation – you can either host it and implement it yourself (at a very competitive cost) or engage experts like ourselves to help you implement.
- It has a very active development roadmap, and being based on Moodle you also have access to a very large developer community to create any bespoke features that you might need.

Totara is Open Source (just like Moodle) but is not quite free, as there is a low-cost subscription which is intended to pay for ongoing development of the solution.
Totara was launched at the start of 2011 and already has over 100 corporate users including McDonald’s, Nikon, BP, Tesco and Nike.
