Implementing Employee Surveys
The process of understanding what motivates, or demotivates, employees and using this information to improve the organisation, is close to our hearts at Think. (Our founder “cut his consultancy teeth” running an employee survey division of an HR consultancy!). So we’ve now organised ourselves to provide a specific employee survey and diagnostics service for our clients.
Our philosophy and approach to employee surveys can be summed up as:
- Rapid feedback – there’s no reason, in the internet age, why surveys need to be annual. Run them regularly and feed back rapidly
- A focus on action – don’t ask questions “because it’d be interesting to know”. Ask questions because they can inform the direction, culture and effectiveness of the organisation
- See surveys as one half of the dialogue – feed back to staff your understanding of what they’ve told you, and what you’re going to do about it
- Collect rich information – we see many organisations overwhelmed by the tick box and metrics culture – “56% of employees thought their manager was effective”. We believe that these sorts of measures tell you very little. Asking employees what they think their manager does well, as an open ended question, provides much more useful data. We have powerful discourse analysis techniques to analyse this data and provide powerful insights.
